Being inside a RC F-16!

In the world of RC FPV (first person view), the king would have to be VRflyer. He has been at the forefront of RC FPV flying. Starting with the humble Multiplex EasyStar, then to a fully aerobatic Yak and now to a EDF powered F-16!

No words could describe what work, skill, time, patience and money goes into something like this. I mean look at the cockpit and heads up display. I bet if you were to show your wife, girlfriend or non-rc'er this video they would thing it was the "real"thing...

I hope you will be inspired after this video....I was!

RC Apple Fanboys

For all you RC Apple fanboys out there. In New York to be precise. Here's a aerial video of the new Apple store under construction. Using a RC helicopter and probably a iPhone :)
Enjoy!

The future aerospace and aeronautical engineers of Standford University have set the altitude record for a 5kg or less airplane that flew fully automated to a height of 7,142 feet. But this is only the tip of the accomplishment.

The UAV and wannabe Burt Rutans not only had to deal with mother nature and software glitches but the red tape for their UAV to fly above the 400ft limit.

Nic Case's previous RC car speed record of 161.34mph has been broken! By a custom made RC rocket car powered by NOS that was clocked at 163.51mph!

Made by a guy who was obsessed over the record for a few years. Trying different methods to get the record, such as putting a big motor on a small chassis or building a twin motor system. But eventually he came up with the custom made rocket car called Black Knight, that gave him his dream.

This guy is a true fully sick RC'er, Well done!

Large Scale RC Mayhem

This past week or two. The large scale versions of RC cars and RC airplanes have had a get together.

Firstly it was the Bajafest 2009, which was total mayhem and then the 2009 Heart of Ohio Huckfest, which is all about giant scale 3D capable RC airplanes doing their thing. Wish I was there...

Anyway, there should be enough video and pics of these two events to keep you and I going for awhile...Enjoy!

With a wingspan of 24 feet, one would say this must be the biggest RC foam airplane ever. Made of foam and constructed in a dorm room. The building of the Pink Floyd, the name given to it. Inspired hundreds of fellow RC'ers to band together and get this history making RC airplane flying.

What's even better, was a proposal to build a 50 foot version of the RC foam airplane! But it never flew. Here's the thread on RCGroups about it. ( prepare for a lot of reading, the thread is 4 years old! )

It takes me a good hour to get to work,..... one way. Which can stuff up a potential good day of flying after work.
There's nothing worse than being stuck in a traffic jam, when there's not a breath of wind to be found and I've charged my lipo ready to go the previous day.
To keep me sane through those tough times I listen to these guys on my iPod. Who give good updates on RC flying events, information on RC shop deals and interviews with pilots and people in the hobby industry.
Give them a go!

Here's another fully sick RC'er that races "big" cars for a living. His name Scott Speed. From formula 1 to NASCAR. No matter want skills they have ( see Tony Stewart ) they still play with RC cars :)

This guy, Tony Nijhuis is a serious RC airplane designer and builder. A Burt Rutan of the RC airplane world you could say. He designs and builds RC airplanes. From the small stuff to the big stuff.
Like the worlds largest electric RC airplane. It's a B-50 bomber, with a wingspan of 19 feet and a weighing in at 80lbs. You could say it's a big girl.

Check out the video!

What do you do if you have a love for RC airplanes, computer programming and a aerospace engineer by day? You combine all three "loves" and make a RC flight simulator that plays on a Xbox 360 of course.

This is exactly what Tim XNA creator did. He created RC-Airsim, which is one of the most popular games on the Xbox LIVE indie chart. Here's a interview.

Here's yet another example of RC saving the day...or someones health in this case. A Japanese farmer is using his RC helicopter to spay his crops with pesticide. Instead of having to lug around a back pack full of the stuff and pump it.
It's like hitting a bird with two stones. Having fun and getting the job done!

Team Associated has claimed the official world record jump by a RC car at 137.3 feet. Thanks to pro RC driver Richard Saxton and a unbreakable Team Associated RC8B Nitro powered RC car.
I have a feeling this record won't stand for long, with electric brushless motors advancing by the month!

Remember the guy who managed to land his RC airplane when a wing came off? Who was then approached by Discovery Channel to pull it off again for a show?

Well now that the show has aired. Jim Bourke the RC airplane pilot has written about his experience and all the work involved to get a few minutes of "actual" footage. Only us the RC'er can really appreciate this fully sick "moment"

Remember the post about a six year old prodigy that could fly RC helicopters 3D unbelievably well?

Well know he is turning his RC skills onto a RC airplane!!!

Remember back in 1997 when the sound barrier was broken on land by Andy Green and his team? Remember the car that did it? The Thrust SSC. That had two huge jet turbines strapped together with the driver in the middle. Remember how fully sick that looked.

Well, CHECK THIS OUT. A guy called Rick Kelly who's a V8 Supercar driver in Australia built a RC 1:10 scale version of the Thrust SSC!!!!! Including RC size Jet engines. To try and break the RC land speed record that Nic Case still holds.

He failed. But man, just looking at those
pictures would make a RC'er stiffen up :)

From NASCAR to RC cars

All the big name NASCAR champions have a few "side" enterprises happening. For the day when they get old and their reflexes slow done a little. They still need to put the food on the table.

NASCAR legend, Tony Stewart has heaps of enterprises happening. From promotional work, to a public relations company and even a RC company!

To mark the 40 year anniversary of the moon landing. Here is a video of a 1:10 scale Saturn V model rocket, launching successfully and getting into the record books for the largest model rocket ever built.
You can't get much better than this.

This beautifully scaled model rocket was built by Steve Eve's. This is his story.

If you didn't already know. The iPhone 3GS takes descent quality aerial video. As you can see by the video.
But man, you either have a lot of money or you're a descent pilot. To risk doing this.

RC Car Hall of Fame

At last, RC'ers now have their own Hall of fame. It may only be for RC cars at the moment but the other RC stuff will get theirs soon.

Congratulations to Matt Francis, who is the first inductee to be in the RC car Hall of Fame. Chosen for his contribution to the hobby and being a fully sick RC'er!!!

( P.S I'll be there soon...... )

Up for some RC night flying???. This guy, Dave/Nightflyyer made a name for himself flying RC at night. Here's a recent video of him RC flying at night.

Check out his YouTube channel for all his other fully sick RC stuff.
