Well there may be a few different methods to break in a EDF (electric ducted fan) RC Jet, to get the best performance and reliability. When asked the question to the manufacturer, this was their response.

I will be honest with you. I did not remove the EDF unit and put locktight on it etc. It requires hacking up my fully sick RC jet which is just too nice to hack-up. I'm going to take the risk that a blade won't fly off ( touch wood ).
But I did throttle up and throttle down to hear or feel anything out of the norm. It sounded fine, to me anyway.
It terms of pre-flight checks, make sure there is NO slop on the control surfaces. That the linkages are the same length, resulting in the elevators being straight and level with each other. Keep your antennae away from the ESC and servo wires to minimize interference. Do a range check. Make sure your control surfaces are moving in the right direction. Up is up and left is left.
Test everything again.........then throw.....................!!!!!

Next Up - The Maiden Flight

Well, today I installed two good quality Hitec HS-55 micro servos that fit perfectly in the original holes, without the need to hack away any foam.
Installed the receiver, which is way back due to the short slack of the servo wire. It should not effect my CG (center of gravity) too much. I plan on using a 2100mAh lipo anyway for longish flight times when I do plenty of those super fast super low passes everyone loves.
This RC jet is going to be really sensitive in the roll and pitch. Due to it's small size and large flap area. According to this guy the best positions to setup the linkage between the flaps is this way. Dial down your exponential on your transmitter as well. You don't want to "over fly" this thing.

Next post will be about how to break in your EDF ( electric ducted fan ) unit in your RC jet and the pre-flight checks before that nail biting first flight.

Well today I glued on the wings and tail plus the cardboard nosecone. Why cardboard??? possibly because that will be the first thing to be squashed into mother earth??
I used 5 minute epoxy as my choice glue, didn't even both with the stuff that came with the RC jet. To be honest it looks OK, but that Chinese writing puts me off. ( I'll give it a test on some scrap foam, to see the results)
Moral of the story in gluing the wings etc is to take your time. Give the glue time to dry and make sure everything is lined up OK, otherwise your RC jet could handle like a pig.
Next I ripped out the cheapo servos, at the same time realizing that the foam that makes the plane look and feel solid, "dents" easily when you use it as a leaver to get out the servos. Oh well, dents and paint chippings gives my RC F-35 jet character!!!
I did not install the new servos yet. ( it was getting cold in my shed/Area 51/hangar ). But I could not help myself firing up that EDF motor. Man, all I can say is FULLY SICK Dude!!!!!

I'll keep you posted.

Today I got my first EDF ( electric ducted fan ) RC jet. A BlitzRCWorks F-35 scale model, with a 64mm edf unit and ready to fly. EDF RC jets have be come really popular lately, so I thought I'll try one..........

Opened the box, first impressions.... "fully sick". A real nice scale body made of glueable foam. Which is always a good think when "the sun got in my eyes" excuses start happening.
It did come ready to fly, which means dodgy radio, receiver and servos. Those will be the items that I will be replacing with quality stuff. I just don't want a servo to lock-up when I am doing that low speed pass.
Comes with LiPo battery, charger and LiPo balancer. Mmmmm, personnally I would stay in the same room when you will be charging, just in case a electrical smell starts developing.

Otherwise, a nice looking RC jet that will fly like
this, I hope.....

Next post I'll let you know how the gluing of the wings, tail etc went. The swapping out of the cheapo servos and how the flap linkage works. Then hopefully a test run, without the EDF sucking up the speed controller....

To put any sort of "weapon" on your RC airplane. You have a very high possibility, a visit by a member of a "G.I Joe"agency will be knocking on your door.
Some RC airplane enthusiasts have stuck model rockets on theirs. Resulting in a few "save the whales" types going up in arms about how RC airplanes give terrorists ideas.

Well, if you asked the CIA what they think of RC airplanes. I think they and so should you, say they are fully sick!!! The CIA dosen't call them RC airplanes though, they are called UAV's (unmanned aerial vehicles).
Pretty much big RC airplanes that carry hellfire missiles, can stay aloft for 40hrs and have cameras that can tell what the "target" is having for breakfast. This is Fully Sick RC!!!

Fully Sick Reading

There is a ton of info regarding how to fly, what to fly and where to fly RC airplanes. Put simply...

Wanna learn how to fly, get a RC flight simulator. What to fly? You can't NOT learn on this plane, the Multiplex Easystar, it has the one of the biggest following's of RC'ers in the world. Every conceivable modification you can do to a RC plane has been done to it. Trust me on this one, I taught myself how to fly with this.

Once you start getting better at RC flying, you're gonna want more speed, more scale looking etc. The bug has bitten you. Welcome to our world.
Where you go from there is up to personnel taste. From foamie scratch built creations to Giant RC airplanes. There is loads of different RC flying domains. Which I will post about, that will get you adrealine pumping and make you wallet lighter.

For an introductory coarse in RC airplanes and flying. Check this out. This guy has been into RC for along time and has done alot of fully sick stuff, as you will see. Enjoy!!!

The world of RC Tanks

The world of RC tanks is quite a small one. In terms of the amount of people that have them. ( not counting the kiddie RC tanks)
A few of the reasons could be the limited amount of kits out there and more importantly the price of a descent RC Tank. But there are always the
certain few amongst us that take the bull by the horns and build their own.

If you are keen to have a go, check out RC Tank HQ for everything you need to know about this niche RC domain. It's a manly thing to do.

Check this YouTube channel out for some RC Tank bashing.

Don't lie. Everyone at least has got a bit of appreciation for a Tank. To be in control of a huge, tree busting, gun equipped armored vehicle. Its the ultimate "man" thing to do.

Well, these guys have appealed to " I want to do a man thing" by allowing us to control a tank. A RC tank, but still.... better than nothing.
This is no virtual simulation. You control real tanks/hardware through your Internet connection using the onboard camera to see where you are going and to see your next RC tank to destroy. Plus you can run over the trees.
It's Fully Sick RC fun!!!

The prodigy of RC!!!

There aren't words to describe this prodigy of RC. The skills and talent he shows are frightening, and whats even scarier is he is only 6 years old!!!

His name is Justin Chi and he started flying RC when he was very young, 8 months old! He started on a RC simulator then progressed to a buddy box. Before he/his dad/fellow Rc'ers knew it, he was out flying them. But is real skill, that very few people have is to fly 3D using a RC helicopter unbelievably well! You have to see it to believe it.

There's a lot of uses for radio control, the good, bad, weird and pretty clever ideas. This is one of those pretty clever RC ideas.

It involves a
fishing pole/rod,RC boat and some water with fish in it (preferably). One doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to workout what comes next.
Pretty much you connect your line to the RC boat and drive to the place where you think there's a fish. BANG! the fish has taken the bait, the line disconnects from the RC boat and you reel in your monster of a fish.
No more "getting stuck" on the weeds or sticks and you don't need to be pro to throw your line where you really wanted it to go.
I'm hooked, I want one!

Check out this YouTube channel, about RC boats and fishing.

In the world of RC rock crawling, its all about torque, maneuverability and a steady hand. Its not about speed or nice paint jobs. Its about crawling over some of the toughest terrain known to a RC'er.
RC rock crawling is a very new area in a very popular market of RC. RC rock crawling only used to be open to the enthusiast that could custom make their rig using the axles from a Tamiya Clod Buster, then find the biggest suspension coils and then build a tubular frame around that.
But know thanks to the growing popularity of RC rock crawling, heaps of the big name RC car manufacturers have come up with some pretty good setups straight out of the box. Some big, such as this Ready To Run crawler
Some small, such as this one and this one. No matter what you budget or experience in RC cars. RC rock crawling is both affordable and drivable. Remember, its all about torque, no bull.

If you have never heard of the RC TopGun show, its because you probably only fly parkflyers and electric ducted fan jets made out of foam....don't worry so do I.

The TopGun RC show is where some of the best RC pilots and builders in the world converge to show off their fine craftsmanship and flying skills and to be crowned "the best" in their category.
There is certainly a lot of money buzzing around up there.

Going green these days seems to be the "fully sick" way to save the world and having a peaceful sleep at night. Knowing you're done your little bit.

Going green in the world of radio control, seems kinda easy. If you are prepared to do away with that awesome smell of nitro fuel burning or that ESC that you have just smoked trying to make your RC plane clock 150mph. In other words going green can turn your RC hobby into a old man sport. Such as gliding gracefully through the warm summer day. Don't get me wrong, looking for thermals and staying in one is a art form.

What I have here is a list of a few possible ways a nitro burning,ESC smoking RC'er can get into.

Fully Sick Reading!!!

"Fully Sick Reading" is going to be a post with a number of links to interesting stories that have happened through the week, regarding military, space, aerospace, cars, boats and whatever else that tickles the fancy of the average Rc'er in the real world. Enjoy!!!

How cool is this???!!!

This genius of a person, hacked/programmed and did what ever else to his iPhone, to get his helicopter to do
this, with his extreme gamer moves.

Buying, building and making RC airplanes can be expensive, especially if you're not that good yet at flying.
So the next best thing to do, is to scratch build your own from pizza box's, drinking straws, foam and anything else that can be glued or taped together. Start off with some decent quality servos, motors and speed controllers, find some plans to build off from, or become the next Burt Rutan!

Check out this forum for scratch building tips, ideas and inspiration.

As we all know, RC helicopters are bloody hard to fly, take years to master( apparently only 4% of the population can do this!! ), high maintenance and expensive. So....you need to start small and cheapish. The best bang for your buck is the Eflite Blade MCX. The Eflite Blade MCX is a "fully sick" radio control helicopter because it can actually go forward, backward, left, right,up and down at the same time being small and easy to fly. Thanks to the coaxial rotor design and built in micro gyros. I have one of these, and am really impressed with the control, flight times and it is easy to fly. To easy I think. You will get the hang of it pretty quick and can get bored after a while. But that's what the cat is for!

Missed out on SEFF 2009?

If you missed out on SEFF ( Southeast electrical flight festival ) 2009, that has just been and gone. Don't worry, I found a pretty good youtube channel that has loads of videos from the electric only festival. That shows the line up of all the new products to come out this year from the manufacturers and heaps of flying.
Including the downfall of one of the biggest RC flying wing ever. The Ohio Combat SRT-10 - 13 feet of twin motored flying wing fury.
Enjoy!

The Parkzone Sukhoi has to be the most hyped about micro radio control airplane ever. Why?? because its micro (weighs only just over an ounce), has 4 channel control ( first time ever on a airplane this small) and has the performance of a Sukhoi.
In the hands of a good pilot, this means fully aerobatic maneuvers and a bit of 3D are possible in your house.
I want one!!!

I thought I'd start this blog about "fully sick RC" stuff, on the history of radio control vehicles and where it all began.....

Like a lot of new technology, especially technology that can be used in war. The armed forces of the world developed it, to become a weapon. Notably the Germans during WWII, on their missile programs followed by the allies. Check out Project Aphrodite for an interesting read.

The first radio control vehicle was a boat. Invented by one of the greatest engineers of all time, Nikola Tesla. That used it to entertain an amazed audience that thought they controlled it.

It wasn't until the 1950's that radio control was introduced into the general market. Which has developed as fast as the computer chip. Enabling you and I to fly and drive our RC vehicles and for the military to fly and drive theirs.

As a result of the invention of Radio Control, we can have freedom and feel the freedom when we do that "fully sick" barrel roll with our RC Mustang.
